I went to bed, but couldn't sleep. This Supreme Court's overturning of Roe vs Wade has my heart weeping for all the already born women who are going to die because of this decision. If you think it's not going to happen, then you don't know your history. Before Roe vs Wade it was illegal to get an abortion. Horrifying stories of women dying from botched coat hanger abortions were not fantasies; they really happened. This is why Roe vs Wade was such a big deal... it made abortion legal. It saved countless lives. Now it's gone. And with it a return to the death of women who become pregnant and choose not to put their body through the trauma of pregnancy, and possibly death. You don't think it takes that big of a toll?! Ask ANY woman who has given birth how her body has changed. It is significant.
You may be one of those who say, "well, she shouldn't have gotten pregnant if she didn't want a baby." To you I say, "maybe if we gave vasectomies to every male child at birth, she wouldn't have gotten pregnant". But oh no, that would be making laws on mens bodies that they didn't choose. Not to worry. A vasectomy is reversable. When a guy shows that he is mature enough to have children, he can just go and "choose" to have it reversed. Problem solved. Lovers can have all the sex they want with a very low chance of becoming pregnant. Oh yeah, vasectomies are not 100% effective. Don't get me wrong, they ARE highly effective... just not completely.
Maybe you will argue that I'm being silly with that suggestion. Maybe you believe that if people just showed a little self-control, then unwanted pregnancies wouldn't happen. And you're right. With enough self-control, no one would ever become a drug addict, alcoholic, suicidal, or shoot up a school. Out of the 8 billion people on this planet, not all of them are able to constantly live such pious lives. Moments of weakness, doubt, hormones, joy, mental issues, and pain, coupled with human instinct, means not every single person is going to always have self-control over every one of their actions. There is a whole field of science called psychology that is devoted to learning why people do the things they do.
Maybe abortion is against your religious beliefs. That is fine. What is NOT fine is forcing YOUR beliefs on someone else through law! There are thousands of religions in this world. All with their own set of beliefs. Imagine being a devout Christian and being forced to by law to live against your beliefs. Just for an example, let's say you were forced to live by Muslim beliefs, or Hindu, or Wiccan. You would not be happy being forced to take part in actions that are literally against your religion. So why would you vote for politicians that say they will do just that?! Not everyone believes abortion is a sin. And they should have the legal right to "choose" whether they want one.
I could go on, but I'll wrap things up with the following; anytime a democratic government makes laws to control the bodies of the governed, it ceases to be democratic. It has become a government that is capable of stripping away any "rights" from ANYONE it wants, at any time. This so-called American Democracy is looking more and more like an American Oligarchy all the time.
So much for President Lincoln's "...government of the people, by the people, for the people."
